Beginning in January, the 4th graders will be learning to play the recorder in music class! The recorder is a small, plastic wind instrument similar in shape to a clarinet. Learning to play the recorder is a fun experience because students get to use all of the music information and skills they have gained and put them together to play an instrument. It is also an excellent predecessor to band since students will practice playing and caring for an instrument. The program we will be using is called Recorder Karate, and students will have the opportunity to earn different color belts as they progress in their playing.
Since each 4th grader will need their own recorder and book, I will be placing an order for recorders and Recorder Karate student books through a music education catalog. I prefer to order them for you so that I can assure you of their quality. The cost for a recorder and book is $5.00. This is due back to school by Friday, November 4th. If your student already has a recorder, they are welcome to use it in class, but please have them bring it in ahead of time so I can check that it is in working order (a book will be provided for any student who already has a recorder).
Students will be responsible for bringing their recorder and book to music class every week this spring. They will also need to practice at home. You may want to consider buying a second recorder so that your student can keep one recorder at home and one at school. This will prevent your student from forgetting their recorder with it’s their music class day. The cost for an extra recorder is $3.00.
Once our program has started, please encourage your child to practice several times a week.
Helpful practice hints:
Thank you for your continued support of the music program! I am looking forward to starting this exciting program with the 4th grade students!

Helpful practice hints:
- Left hand is placed above the right hand
- Cover all the holes tightly - leaks cause squeaks!
- Blow gently with “warm” air.
