In an effort to be more accessible, I have decided to start a Facebook page and plan to update that more regularly than this blog. Please check out the new Facebook website for WRS and OQS General Music and Chorus!

"Chandler is delighted to present the exciting Neave Trio, a group from Boston that wowed the audience at the Greensboro Music Festival last summer. The concert is Saturday November 16th at 7:30, and will be followed by complimentary goodies in the gallery.
Their program features works by four women composers, from the Romantic period through modern day, including Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio; Amy Beach’s Piano Trio in A minor, Op. 150; Cécile Chaminade’s Piano Trio No. 1, Op. 11; and Jennifer Higdon’s Piano Trio. This is a great opportunity for youth interested in music to hear up close a violin, a cello, and a piano collaborate to creating an interesting program. All students coming to this event get in free. And any adult bringing one student to the box office that evening gets $10 off his/her ticket; two students, $20 off. Please tell students about this special November 16th offer. They can go to the Neave Trio's website www.neavetrio.com to hear samples of their music." See https://www.chandler-arts.org/ for more information! Recently, kindergarteners played a fun movement game called "Hey Betty Martin." After learning to sing the song in their best singing voices, students picked a color from the bucket one at a time. The color they got correlated to the movement they should perform as they led others around the outside of the circle. Whoever the leader landed closest to when the song ended became the next leader! This was a great game for practicing many different skills, including singing, listening, movement, turn-taking, and leadership.
The 4th graders performed an instrumental ensemble to a song called "Listen." The song had multiple different parts to be performed simultaneously which was a challenge for the students. Students also had the opportunity to improvise (make up their own music on the spot) on a barred instrument to a set rhythm. This activity served as a great review of the crossover xylophone technique as well as the different kinds of barred instruments (xylophone, metallophone, and glockenspiel).
We have had a fun first few weeks of school in music! The students have been playing name games, practicing keeping the steady beat,, reviewing notes and rests, and performing correct technique on multiple instruments.
Fifth grade students learned a nonsense song called "Sarasponda" then practiced a rather complex partner rhythm stick game which included tapping, crossing, and even tossing rhythm sticks! This all wrapped into a review of what steady beat is versus rhythm, and how the two pieces fit together in a piece of music. The students did a great job working with their partners to overcome challenges and have fun (see pictures below)! The Ottauquechee School Spring Concert is on Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 p.m.
